Teacher TechStories

karen_cole3Karen Cole’s students at St. Michael’s Episcopal Day School in Carmichael, California are getting an interactive and an advanced educational experience using Web 2.0 tools and other technologies.  Karen is the librarian and Learning Center Director for St. Michael’s.  She credits her school's engagement with using 21st century technology tools as collaborative team effort of teachers and staff at her school.  Karen considers herself a novice with these tech tools and continues to learn new ways to engage her students and peers and attributes much of what she has learned from taking the live online workshops on MyCTAP.org.

Ryan O'Donnell

Teacher TechStories

OdonnellRyan O’Donnell has created a technology-rich environment for his students at Rocklin High in Rocklin Unified School District in Placer County.  He was recently named the district’s 2010 “Teacher of the Year” for his ability to create extraordinary learning opportunities for his students, as well as other educators.

Ryan had big dreams of being a head varsity football coach when he started teaching over twelve years ago at Wooster High School in Reno, Nevada.  Trying to help the veteran coach read the “plays” off either a legal pad or napkin, Ryan organized and created them in PowerPoint.  This was one of his earliest integration of technology which led him to his current video podcasting lectures for his World History classes at Rocklin High.  Ryan started video taping his lectures for students who either missed class or needed additional review.  Using Adobe Premier Elements for editing and adding PowerPoint or other features to his videos, he started using green screen technology.  His students have created videos using templates he created as if they were TV correspondents who are covering a historical character or event. Many times his web design students are busy helping him and other students with various aspects of video podcasting. Former students come back each year to peer teach and make presentations to current classes, which are also video taped.

Teacher Tech Stories: Alice Mercer

Teacher TechStories
altAlice Mercer started out as most teachers, learning technology on her own, nothing formal, just her own interest in using the computer in her classroom. Currently, she is the computer lab teacher at Oak Ridge Elementary is Sacramento City Unified School District. Alice has been teaching for 12 years since leaving her position as an analyst for Wells Fargo. Her use of technology grew from simple Internet activities and webquest type lessons with her students to using PowerPoint and Inspiration for direct instruction. Eventually, she took the plunge and began blogging with her older students to give them a voice by posting reflections on what they have learned. She started a teacher blog with other educators as a form of self-reflection. Alice is very active in many of the educational blogs such as ISTE Connects. In late June, she and several other local educators attended the National Educational Computing Conference in Washington, DC (NECC) and you can see her photos and her reflections on this three day event on her blog site and her webpage. It is easy to see why she was the winner of the 2009 Edublogger Competition. Alice presented her conference reflections with the CTAP 3 EdTech Leadership Network this August.
